1. When can I join the Scouting programs, and will my son or daughter miss out on anything by starting at a particular time?

 

  • Scouting recruits year round and anytime is a good time to join.  The program moves at the pace of the youth.  They will not have missed out on anything by joining at a particular time during the year.

2. What do I need to do to join the Scouts?

 

  • Determine the program to join based on age and interest. 
    Cub Scouts is for boys age 7-10 or 1st -5th grades
    Boy Scouts is for boys age 11-18 or 6th-12th grades
    Venturing is the High Adventure Program of the BSA and is Co-ed for ages 14-21.
  • Visit the www.race2scouts.com web site to find a unit near you where you would like to join.
  • Contact the unit leader and let them know you would like to join.  The contact information (telephone and email) for the unit leader can be found on the same site www.race2scouts.comThe Unit Leader will invite you to attend their next meeting.  
  • Attend the meeting of the (Pack, Troop, Team, or Crew) where the leadership will collect the Youth application, registration fees, and provide information on the next meeting along with relevant information on their location of Scouting.  A sample youth application can be located here. 


 

3.  Once I fill out the registration form - then what?  

 

  • The unit you registered for will provide you with a calendar of the unit’s activities and dates and times of their meetings.   They will also inform you of the uniform requirements for their location and handbook needs.  You can purchase a Scouting uniform or handbook at the most convenient of our two locations- open Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM and Saturday 10AM-4PM.

**The Scout shop will be happy to help you in locating all the Patches, Pins, Belts, Socks, Shirts, Pants, Hats and other needs for the new uniform.  The information you will need to bring when you visit is the Pack, Troop, or Crew) number. 
Note: Cub Scouts may also have a den number and Boy Scouts may have a Patrol name.

4. As a parent can I attend the meetings with my son or daughter? 

 

  • YES, parents are welcome, invited and encouraged to attend meetings and on trips and outings.
    Note: a parent or guardian is required at all functions for the 1st graders.

5.  I would like to volunteer to be a leader - how can I do this?  

 

  • If you are interested in working with a local (Pack, Troop, or Crew) locate the unit of interest at www.race2scouts.com contact the unit leaders and inform them of your interest.  Note all adult applications receive a background check and for this reason a Social Security number is needed.
    A sample Adult Application can be found here.  If you would like to volunteer your time and talents with District Activities, Serve on a District Committee or Council Committee contact the local Occoneechee Council, BSA at 919-872-4884.

6. My son or daughter is currently registered in Scouting, but I am interested in transferring to another unit because of   meeting schedule conflicts- How do I do this?  

 

  • To transfer contact the unit leader of the unit you would like to transfer, fill out another youth application and pay the transfer fee $1.00.  Once this is complete you can begin attending at the new location.

7. My family is relocating to the area from another Council how do I get into the program here?  

 

  • Visit the www.race2scouts.com web site and find a unit convenient to where you would be relocating.  Contact the unit leader and complete a Youth Application to transfer.  There is a transfer fee of $1.00.
