District and Council Advanced Leadership Training Course Descriptions

Commissioners’ Basic Training (CBT)

This is a course for unit, district and council commissioners (including ADCs and ACCs). The course consists of three instructional sessions, as well as unit visitations. Attending the course does not entitle the participant to wear the "trained" strip until after they complete the unit visitation portion of the requirement.

NOTE:

Roundtable Commissioners and staff are encouraged to attend CBT so they understand unit level commissioner service. However, our council also offers a "Boy Scout Commissioner Training" course and a "Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner and Staff Basic Training" course (offered at Commissioners’ College).

Commissioners’ College

Scouting is constantly changing to better serve the world we live in. As such, commissioners must continually adjust their skills to provide a more valuable service to our units. Therefore, commissioners should view learning as an important part of their Scouting lives – every month, every year. With this in mind, the national council has developed courses, resource materials, and training recognitions structured around an annual commissioners’ college.

NOTE:

In some councils, a Commissioners’ Conference is just a different variation of a Commissioner’s College. However, in our council, the college is a training event and the conference is a council level planning event.

Our commissioners’ college consists of six program tracks:

  1. Bachelor of Commissioner Science
  2. Masters of Commissioner Science
  3. Doctor of Commissioner Science
  4. Continuing Education (Supplemental Training)
  5. Bachelor of Roundtable Commissioner Science
  6. Masters of Roundtable Commissioner Science

Our commissioners’ college offers six degrees and one certificate:

  • Associate of Commissioner Science Degree (ACS)
  • Bachelor of Commissioner Science Degree (BCS)
  • Bachelor of Roundtable Commissioner Science Degree (BRCS)
  • Master of Commissioner Science Degree (MCS)
  • Master of Roundtable Commissioner Science Degree (MRCS)
  • Certificate of Achievement for Post Graduate Studies
  • Doctor of Commissioner Science Degree (DCS)

District Committee Workshop

This is the basic training for all volunteers serving in the role of District Chairman, District Commissioner or as chairman of one the operating committees of the district such as: Program Chairman, Membership Chairman, Advancement Chairman, Training Chairman and Camping Chairman.

The workshop provides time-proven methods for becoming a well-coordinated and dedicated group of Scouters committed to achieving the mission on the Occoneechee Council and its districts. In addition, this workshop helps initiate a working relationship between all council and district personnel.

The workshop covers the four functions of the district: Membership, Program, Unit Service and Finance. The workshop also provides role-specific presentations on the following:

  • District Key-3
  • Membership
  • Advancement
  • Training
  • Camping
  • Activities and Civic Service

Trainer Development Conference (TDC)

The Trainer Development Conference is designed for all Scouters who want to serve as leadership trainers. The course introduces trainer candidates to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for all Scout leader trainers, and helps them become familiar with the latest principles, methods, and techniques used in effective training.

NOTE:

TDC evolved out of an earlier course entitled, Train The Trainer (TTT) or triple-T.

TDC is required for anyone serving as a course director in our council. Wood Badge is the only course that requires TDC before someone can serve on staff. However, TDC is recommended for anyone serving as an adult trainer because TDC teaches time-proven training methods appropriate to the Scouting program and the BSA-supplied syllabi.

Trainer's EDGE

The Trainer’s EDGE is a more advanced supplimental trainig event for Scouters who have completed the Trainer Development Conference (TDC). The Trainer’s EDGE is a required train‐the‐trainer course for Wood Badge and NYLT staffs.

The purpose of the Trainer’s EDGE course is to provide and help develop the platform skills of a trainer. It is meant to supplement the practice offered through Wood Badge and NYLT staff development, with a focus on the participant, while raising the level of skill a trainer brings to the staff experience. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media. Specifically, this course will ensure you are ready to maximize the EDGE model (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide and Enable).

University of Scouting

The purpose of our council’s university is to promote learning and interaction between the different program areas, while enabling Scouters to prepare themselves to put forth a quality program in their units.

Our university consists of four colleges:

  1. A College of Cub Scouting
  2. A College of Boy Scouting
  3. A College of High Adventure/Venturing
  4. A College of General Studies

Our university offers four degrees and one certificate:

  • Associate of Scouting: Awarded upon completion of seven (7) hours of study.
  • Bachelors of Scouting: Awarded upon completion of an additional seven (7) hours of study. (14 hours total)
  • Masters of Scouting: Awarded upon completion of seven (7) hours of study beyond Bachelor’s degree. (21 hours total)
  • Certificate of Advanced Study: Awarded upon completion of an additional seven (7) hours beyond the first graduate degree. (28 hours total)
  • Doctorate of Scouting: Awarded upon completion of an additional seven (7) hours to include faculty or staff requirement. (Total hours of study 35 hours).

NOTE:

Our council integrated the traditional Cub Scout Pow Wow course offerings into the College of Cub Scouting. The two are synonymous (we do not offer a separate Pow Wow event).
